Position Summary Information

Job Summary

A Peer Tutor facilitates learning as a guide and coach to assist students to become successful independent learners.

Essential Job Duties

• Provides academic assistance to students individually or in small-groups
• Explains, models, and/or offers academic assistance related to the subject or assignment
• Maintains a weekly schedule of available hours in the Academic Resource Centers (ARC) for student appointments
• Keeps accurate records of tutoring sessions using tutoring software and/or relevant forms
• Attends tutor-training sessions as required by the Chair

Performs other related duties as incidental to the work described herein.

Minimum Work Experience
Minimum Education

• Student must have successfully completed two semesters of college coursework, be enrolled in a minimum of 6 credit hours and have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
• Earned a grade of at least a B in specific courses in which the student will tutor

Preferred Qualifications

Previous tutoring experience.

Physical Requirements

Must be physically able to perform job duties.

Required Knowledge and Skills

• Good interpersonal communication skills and ease in relating to people from varying educational, cultural, and social backgrounds
• Responsible, reliable, and punctual
• Ability to provide assistance with test-taking strategies, note taking skills, time management, and computer literacy skills
• Maintains appropriate and professional behavior at all times including maintaining the confidentiality of students concerning grades, ability, etc.
• Ability to work with other tutors, faculty, and staff

This position description covers the most essential functions and duties associated with this position. Other duties may be assigned by the President or appropriate supervisory personnel. The College reserves the right to alter duties, responsibilities, conditions, working hours, and job title as necessary. Instructional positions must meet minimum SACSCOC criteria and the minimum criteria of other pertinent accrediting, licensing, and credentialing agencies in the area of teaching assignment.
